The Akron Civic Theatre is one of northeast Ohio’s architectural treasures, a vestige of a time when going to a movie was a grand event, with films shown in elaborate, palatial theaters. Akron Civic was one of the last great movie palaces of the 1920s, with its ornate Moorish décor and auditorium ceiling with moving clouds floating across a star-lit sky. At one point there was talk of demolition which would’ve been tragic but for the past 20+ years it’s been getting renovated, and now it’s used for everything from concerts to high school graduations.
Keeping up such a venue requires fundraising and the Akron Civic is known for its creative gala fundraisers. This week, the Akron Civic Theatre Women’s Guild and the law firm of Perantinides & Nolan are hosting “The Diamond of the Season” gala. The theme is 1800s aristocracy and guests are invited to come in early 1800s Regency fashion or contemporary formal wear if historical costuming isn’t your thing — don’t come as one of the 1mpoverished masses who made up the bulk of Regency era England! This event is all about aping the elegance of the courts and the gentry.
The evening will offer a “strolling dinner” by D’Agnese’s and “decadent desserts,” a host bar, live entertainment including immersive performances and dancing, high-stakes auction tables, and free valet parking with each ticket.
