Gambian Kora Master Performs at Kent's Standing Rock Cultural Arts

Fri 5/8 @ 7-9PM

Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural has joined with The Crosby  Archives and Cultural Gardens in Kent and Jali Productions to host a concert of kora music by Gambian griot alhaji Paper Susso at its gallery on North Water Street.

The kora is a West African stringed instrument, typically with 21 strings, with a body carved from a gourd, and musical properties of that combine the qualities of the harp, the lute, and the guitar. Susso is a master kora player, who comes from a family steeped in The Gambia’s musical and oral storytelling traditions. He has performed and taught all over the world, spreading word about this traditional form of African music. He is also carrying the music forward as the director of the Koriya Musa Center for Research in Oral Tradition, and his son is also a kora player who performs with his father’s band.

Papa Susso will be performing at Standing Rick Cultural Arts with his group Rhythm of Love. Admission is $20 which benefits the sponsoring organizations. Get more information here.
