WRHS Screens Russo Brothers’ Early Film “Welcome to Collinwood,” Set in Cleveland

Thu 3/12 @ 5:30-7:30PM

Back in 2002, when Cleveland-born and -raised Joe and Anthony Russo’s second feature film Welcome to Collinwood came out, they weren’t sitting at the top of the movie world as they are today. Their debut film Pieces had come out in 1997, so this was hardly an auspicious career beginning. For Welcome to Collinwood, they remade a 1958 Italian caper comedy about an attempted jewel theft; the plot is very convoluted. But it got the brother duo favorable attention and launched their career, first with a series of successful TV directing gigs, and then 12 years after its release, rocketing them into the film firmament with a series of four Marvel superhero movies (a fifth is coming out this year), making them among the highest-grossing directors alive.

If you never saw this film, with its local color, you can catch it at the Western Reserve Historical Society, as part of its current film series accompanying its exhibit Hollywood on the Cuyahoga: Northeast Ohio and the Movies. Come early to see the exhibit and join a networking reception; start afterwards for a short panel discussion. It’s free with regular admission but registration is required. Go here to sign up.
