After knocking around Los Angeles and New York City in the late 80s and early 90s, trying to break into the music scene. singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley started to attract major label attention for his distinctive, emotive vocals and influences so diverse that had him unique. His debut album, Grace, released in 1994, earned more praise than sales, but laid down the marker for a future flourishing career. But after extensive touring and beginning to work on his follow-up album, he died in a freak drowning accident when he went for an impromptu swim in a Mississippi River channel in May 1997. He was just 30.
Despite his short life and career, his music has continued to resonate; Grace has provided a touchstone for any subsequent musicians and several documentaries have been made about him. One of those, 2025’s It’s Never Over: Jeff Buckley, directed by Amy Berg, will screen at the Rock Hall this week as part of its Rock & Roll Movie Club series. It includes interviews with his mother and others close to him, as well as archival footage.
