Right now, supporters of Cleveland’s vibrant college radio scene are keyed up, thanks to Cleveland State University’s handing over of the nearly 50-year-old campus station WCSB-FM to ideastream public radio for a 24-hour jazz station — behind the backs of the entire station staff and its many supporters.
There was a lot of secrecy around the transfer, with new information coming out all the time. One of the stories is that ideastream first approached John Carroll University about taking over WJCU-FM 88.7 and was turned down. Good! So you may want to show your appreciate for WJCU and college radio in general by attending its WJCU Blizzard Bash taking place at the Beachland Tavern.
Not only will you get to hear four excellent area artists, including Akron native Yacobucci, Cleveland’s well-known woman-led Lilieae, acoustic/ambient group Newport Motel and High Tolerance, but the show is being held to support the Hunger Network of Cleveland, with a 50/50 raffle and raffle baskets to bid on. They share that “This year’s Blizzard Bash is a collaborative effort by John Carroll University students and staff at WJCU 88.7 FM. WJCU Board Members Maeve Mullen and Sage Fossecca are the lead organizers of the event, alongside NEORocks DJ Jason Patrick Meyers, who will return as presenter and creator of Blizzard Bash.”
