Forum Tackles Debate About Ohio Property Taxes

Sun 2/1 @ 9AM

As property values soared in recent years with inflation, skyrocketing property taxes have become a thorny issue with Ohioans. They’ve even provoked a ballot issue campaign, currently gathering signatures, to abolish property taxes altogether. That would make Ohio the first state in the country to do so and there’s a reason: these taxes fun almost all our essential services, from schools and libraries, to firefighters and police, to park and social services and infrastructure repair. While the frustration is understandable, with Ohio Republicans already steadily cutting income taxes on the wealthy, with an eye to ending state income taxes completely, the only way to fund anything would be economy-crushing sales taxes.

Zach Schiller, research director for progressive think tank Ohio Policy Matters, will be the guest at the next Sunday forum at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland in Shaker Heights, to take about “How Can/Should We Pay for What We Need?”

We obviously need schools and firefighters; how are we willing to pay? The forum is free and open to all. Go here for more information.
