Akron’s Musica Puts the Spotlight on Woman-Fronted Bands

Lilieae

Sat 1/17 @ 8PM

It’s scarcely necessary anymore to have a special night of female-fronted bands such as the one at Akron’s Musica this weekend: there are now more than you can possibly keep track of. But it’s still nice to be able to catch a lineup of talented local women musicians on one stage in a single night.

Two of the four bands will be familiar to Cleveland audiences as they’ve played around here in clubs and on festivals: the confident, hard-hitting Lilieae, and very young (they met at the School of Rock), punk-influenced, self-described “queer band” Girl Cologne, both of which go beyond “female fronted” to include women in the band as well as upfront on the mic. We weren’t as familiar with Akron’s Twin Atomic which has a hard edge to the pop/rock sound created by its four guy musicians and woman singer, or with Akron indie rockers the Jo Shmos, three dudes and a woman guitarist/vocalist upfront.
