Every year in Akron, something strange and tinsel-draped appears on local stages. It calls itself Missile Toe and boasts that it is “the world’s greatest Christmas band.” You be the judge when it makes its annual appearance at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron.
There’s a bonus too. They’ll be sharing the bill with another Akron band — an all-year-around band — called the Crones. They aren’t really crones but the tongue-in-cheek name refers to the fact that they are all seasoned women musicians over the age of 50. And they include an Akron legend, vocalist Tracy Thomas, who was once Akron’s hot New Wave chick back in the early ’80s when she fronted Unit 5. Since then she’s recorded a flock of solo records, performed rock, folk and jazz, and repeatedly demonstrated that her pipes are as strong as ever. Her compatriots in the Crones are also all stellar musicians with a repertoire heavy on songs by women rockers such as the B-52s, Cyndi Lauper and Blondie.
