Thu 10/30 @ 5-8PM
As the name suggests, this is the 9th iteration of Skull and Skeleton in Art IX: From Folk Art to Pop Culture, curated by Mary Urbas who formerly did the show at the expansive galleries at Lakeland Community College where she was director. Now that those galleries have closed, she’s taking her signature shows to other venues around Northeast Ohio, such as the gallery at Tri-C East where the Skull and Skeleton show will open Thursday October 30 with the signature costume party reception and boneyard market.
The show features around 100, mostly local or regional, artists who present their take on the show’s theme in a variety of mediums and styles, drawing from the traditions of the Mexican Day of the Dead. They include some familiar names from past shows and from the art scene around town, including Negative Space gallery owner Gadi Zamir, known for his ornate works; Parade the Circle founder Robin VanLear, whose outsized puppets and other extravagantly costumed figures became its symbols; caricaturist George Kocar; and Lauren Herbold whose distinctive spindly figures seem to draw from skeleton art. The show will also include an ofrenda created by the Tri-C Raics Latinas Club.
The show and the opening reception are free and open to the public. The show will be on view through Thursday December 11.
