On Tuesday October 7, former staff members and listeners of Cleveland State’s student radio WCSB-FM 89.3, students, musicians and community members gathered on campus with handmade signs to hold a vigil in support of the nearly 50-year-old station. Its diverse, multi-genre format was abruptly terminated on Friday October 3 and switched to an all-jazz format under the name JazzNEO, under the umbrella of Cleveland’s public media organization Ideastream. The station’s manager Alison Bomgartner addressed the crowd following an hour of quiet sign-holding in intermittent rain, suggesting that the station’s supporters would continue to fight for its existence as it drew attention to the elimination of this community asset.
