Akron Symphony Concert Brings the Drama

Akron Symphony Concert Brings the Drama

Sat 10/18 @ 7:30PM

“We’ve loaded this concert with cinematic drama,” says the Akron Symphony’s promotion for their upcoming concert this weekend at EJ. Thomas Hall. That’s a big promise they’d better deliver on, although the pieces chosen suggest that maybe they can. All the pieces evoke worlds of magic, mystery and even darkness.

The headlining piece is Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, written for a 1910 performance in Paris of a new ballet based on Russian folk tales by the legendary Ballets Russes. Also on the bill: fellow Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead, a symphonic poem first performed in 1909; music from Danny Elfman’s score for the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow; and the world premiere of Cliff Eidelman’s The Tempest. While Eidelman, who like Elfman is a prolific scorer of film music, has recorded the work, this will be its first orchestral performance and Eidelman says he will be at the premiere, with Akron Symphony music director Christopher Wilkins wielding the baton.
