Playwright Jen Silverman’s 2018 play Witch is described as “a delightfully devilish dark comedy for our times.” It’s based on a drama from the Jacobean era, the British theater period overlapping with and immediately following Shakespeare in the early 1600s. It was a period that reflected a cynicism about human nature with themes of corruption, revenge, betrayal and greed, things we’d recognize from today’s U.S. political scene.
In Silverman’s play, a devil in a village appears to offer Faustian deals to residents: their souls for their darkest wishes. A woman accused of being a witch rejects the offer, but the devil doesn’t give up easily.
Witch is Dobama Theatre’s kickoff play for its new season. It opens with a preview on Thursday October 2, with a formal opening on Friday October 3, and runs through Sunday October 26. Go here for tickets.
