In August 1986, I attended a Smiths concert at Public Hall. I recall looking around the lobby during intermission and realizing I was probably the only person there in a light-colored (pink!) cotton sundress. I was surrounded by a sea of black, and not just black (I have a black sundress) but long, heavy black pants, long-sleeved black sweaters, thick-soled black boots. August!
If you were in that sea of black, or are thinking wistfully, “I wish I’d been old enough to be there, wearing five layers of black clothing,” then Dark Wave Dance Cave, the monthly dance party at the Winchester Music Tavern, is for you. DJs Mimi Dromette and Matt Darkstar will be spinning all the gloomy, doomy (but somehow infectious) music from the 80s and 90s that you’ve come to love. Goth, darkwave, post punk, synth pop — they’ve got a big repertoire. You can wear black—or not. I think it’s air-conditioned.
