Amy Winehouse’s life was short but blazing. A determined and unapologetic addict (her song “Rehab” from her 2006 sophomore album Back to Black contained the repeated lyric, “They tried to make me go to rehab, I said no no no”), Winehouse had a career that lasted a mere eight years before she died of substance abuse in 2011 at the age of 27. But in that time, she sold tens of millions of albums and influenced countless other singers with her visceral soul-style vocals. Back to Black was one of the biggest selling albums of the decade. After that her career was a series of alternating dazzling triumphs and disasters, leading to the inevitable conclusion for an artist so gifted but so troubled.
This week the Rock Gall is screening the 2015 documentary Amy as part of its film series. Amy looks at that roller coaster career, marked by self-harm, mental illness, and destructive relationship, and includes interviews with Winehouse, interviews with dozens of people who knew her and previously unreleased tunes. It even includes home movie footage of her singing at the age of 14.
