The 13th annual Cleveland Kurentovanje, near the East 65th & St. Clair location of the National Slovenian Home and the Slovenian Museum and Archives, is based one a Slovenian festival where furry-costumed “kurenti” clang big bells to chase away the winter and greet the spring. And most of the people in the massive crowd lining St. Clair that greeted their appearance would’ve agreed that was needed on this bitter cold Saturday.
The event kicked off with the parade, with the ever-growing crowd of kurenti bringing up the rear (Dressing up kids as kurenti seems to be a growing trend). Luckily, most of the post parade activities — food, drink, music, dancing, bocce, tons of kids’ activities from crafts to story telling to building blocks — took place inside the Slovenian home. For the cold hardy, there was food (and a fire pit!) outside, along with a tent where the Chardon Polka Band played to a packed crowd showing off their dance moves.
