Nearly eight years again Daniel Brown and Michael Robinson co-founded Rust Belt Riders. The duo picked up food scraps from local restaurants on their bikes and composted them into growing material. It’s grown well beyond that, developing its line of Tilth soils and recently acquiring a huge facility in the Valley View area where it will be able to ramp up its manufacturing.
Now the operation has more than 20 employees and creates tons of soil from materials that would’ve otherwise been discarded. You may have seen their trucks around town; bikes just aren’t practical anymore on that scale.
They also have an office in Asiatown where they’ll be holding an open house this Saturday. The family-friendly event will feature games, music and education about recycling: get the kids excited about reducing the waste stream! They’re inviting people to squeeze one last wearing out of their Halloween costume and bring their pumpkins along for a pumpkin toss (will they then be composted?)
It’s free and open to all.
