Cleveland Zoo Leader Talks About Primate Conservation at City Club

Fri 3/4 @ noon

One of the most exciting pieces of news recently from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo was the birth in October of a baby gorilla, the first born at the zoo ever. (You can see him at the zoo every day from 11am-3pm).

Want to hear more about him and why his birth is so significant. Join the zoo’s executive director Chris Kuhar at the City Club for “My Gorilla Teacher: Primates, Zoos, and the Conservation Journey.”

The Western lowland gorilla is, like so many others, an endangered species, and one of the zoo’s missions is to educate people about their situation and raise money for their conservation (The recent contest to name Kayembe raised nearly $15,000 for gorilla conservation.) While some animal rights activists believe zoos shouldn’t exist, in recent years they have become leaders in making people aware of how habitat destruction, human encroachment and climate change are causing populations of animals to become threatened with extinction.

The forum will also be livestreamed starting at 12:30pm. You can tweet questions to @TheCityClub or text them to 330-541-5794.
