This year, the Ohio State Fair was cancelled for the first time since World War II. It joined a long list of Ohio county fairs that were cancelled, as well as state fairs across the country, eliminating what is the major event of the year in many rural areas.
But you can still enjoy the event vicariously, by joining The Musical Theater Project, to watch and discussion the 1945 musical film State Fair. It features classic tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein such as ‘It Might as Well Be Spring,” (which won an Oscar for Best Original Song) and “It’s a Grand Night for Singing.” In it a family — mother, father, son, daughter and prize pig — goes to the titular fair from their farm and … do they find romance? What do you think? Even the pig!
TMTP’s Bill Rudman will conduct the online discussion. Start by watching his video introduction at the website, then watch the film on Amazon Prime, iTunes or YouTube. (Make sure you watch the original film, not the 1962 remake with Pat Boone, Bobby Darin and Ann-Margret). Then join Bill on Thursday September 3 on Zoom for the post-film discussion, which includes a Q&A. Go here to be part of it.
