Refugees
There’s not a single one of us who isn’t a descendent of immigrants and refugees. We’re keenly aware of that in our region, but it’s the same from sea to shining sea. Let’s keep that in mind as we share a cornucopia of coolness happening this week.
Andy Warhol, born Andy Warhola in Pittsburgh of parents from Slovakia, is the subject of our next show, ”When Andy Met Lou,” of the confluence of Warhol, Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground, and their collaborative live show, the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Tix are on sale now for shows at BOP STOP and Jilly’s Music Room in September, and are expected to sell out.
Bookstores Against Borders is working with four area book shops, the Learned Owl, Mac’s Backs, Visible Voice and Loganberry, to benefit RAICES, a nonprofit which provides legal services to refugees & immigrants at our southern border. Cleveland illustrator, caricaturist and political cartoonist Ron Hill has four NE Ohio suburban papers running his editorial cartoons, and he’s signing his book, The Usual Suspects, at Coventry Village Library during the Pekar Comic Fest.
Two dozen brilliant teenaged violinists from all around the world will be at Oberlin College vying to win the Cooper Competition. La Placita Marketplace in Clark-Fulton offers Hispanic culture, food, arts and music. Ingenuity’s Ingnite! workshop helps entrepreneurs with their fear of public speaking. Vanity Crash inaugurates the live broadcast of the Rock Hall’s SUN SETS series this Friday from 5-7pm with a free concert. For one and all. –Thomas Mulready

Andy Warhol, Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground and the Exploding Plastic Inevitable
The intersection of two masters of the late 20th Century, Andy Warhol and Lou Reed, resulted in a spontaneous combustion of music, film, poetry, visual effects and underground culture that spawned generations of followers and redefined art in the modern world. Warhol called it the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Thomas Mulready hosts a multimedia presentation featuring rare video, needle drops, trivia, contests and giveaways, followed by a live music showcase by the band Vanity Crash pairing music of the Velvet Underground with their own sizzling originals.
Tickets are on sale now for Fri 9/13 and Sat 9/14 at 8PM at BOP STOP in Cleveland, then Sun 9/22 “Velvet Brunch” at noon at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron.

Along with the bad news about the closure of daily newspapers has been the loss of editorial cartoonists, whose work often expressed complex ideas in a single easy-to-grasp visual. Cleveland illustrator, caricaturist and political cartoonist Ron Hill is swimming against the tide with a roster of four NE Ohio suburban papers running his work.
Hill says he believes that editorial cartoons “engage the public and give them something to agree with, cheer for or hate and write a letter or pick up the phone or whatever.” He’s got a new book out called The Usual Suspects, compiling some of his visual commentary on the major political figures of our era. Meet him, buy the book & have him sign it at the Coventry Village Library during the Peak Comic Fest. Sat 7/20.
Magikal Botanicals to Bring Mystical Fun to the Botanical Garden
Don your cloak and bring your friends to Magikal Botanicals on Thu 7/25 @ 6-9PM, featuring tea-leaf readings, mystical music, broom races, a costume contest and more. This all-new event will also include botanical artifacts from the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft & Magick, smudges, spell kits & jewelry from Lake Witch, and a tour of the magical plants in the Botanical Garden’s outdoor gardens.

Books and immigration are natural partners. Both enrich us culturally and broaden the scope of ideas available to us. So Bookstores Against Borders, a fundraiser started by a legacy independent bookstore in Madison, Wisconsin, to benefit RAICES, a nonprofit which provides legal services to refugees & immigrants at our southern border, makes perfect sense.
Four NE Ohio bookstores – Hudson’s Learned Owl, Mac’s Backs on Coventry, Visible Voice in Tremont and Loganberry on Larchmere – will donate 10% of their sales Sat 7/20. “Part of our mission as booksellers is to raise awareness about national and global issues and injustices,” says Mac’s Backs owner Suzanne DeGaetano. “This campaign with our bookselling colleagues to support separated and detained families at our border is vital and necessary.”

Many Cleveland neighborhoods have changed dramatically over the years, victims of neglect, careless preservation of history, and gentrification. Tremont, which was isolated by freeway construction in the middle of the last century, has seen all three occur in the past 70 years.In order to share what Tremont was – and in some cases still is – Tremont West Development Corporation Arts Committee has installed the Tremont Art + History Museum on the corner of Professor & College avenues: more than 40 digital weatherproof images of paintings, drawings and other scenes for the neighborhood made between 1862-1950. It has plans to add a section featuring modern views by contemporary artists.
BorderLight International Theatre + Fringe Festival is a new festival of contemporary theater featuring 40 productions from around the world, performed across multiple stages located between Public Square and Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland July 24-27, 2019.

Burning River Roller Derby hosts an evening of scrimmage bouts, with local and out-of-town skaters randomly assigned to teams playing round-robin games. The event at Euclid’s Orr Ice Arena is low stakes and should be a lot of fun.

If you’re not doing anything today, come on down to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo where you can see the new baby giraffe, check out how big last year’s baby snow leopards are now, and watch the tigers at Tiger Passage. Best of all, on Mondays it’s free to residents of Cuyahoga County and Hinckley.

County fair season is in full swing in NE Ohio, with Summit and Lake County Fairs taking place this week, offering bad-for-you food, rides, 4H displays, large vegetables, animals, special shows from magic to acrobats, and motor sports, including the popular drag races and demolition derbies.
