Cleveland-Area DIY Artists Present “Geriatric Mayhem” at Grog Shop

Artist Staci McNasty’s work will be on display at the Mayhem Geriatric show taking place May 16 at the Grog Shop and BSIDE Lounge in Cleveland Heights.

Not your typical art show is how Art From The Eye’s Russ Seligman describes the upcoming Geriatric Mayhem Art and Music Event taking place Thu 5/16 at the Grog Shop and BSIDE Lounge in Cleveland Heights.

“Your typical art show is usually in a gallery, people are dressed up and the art is the highlight,” said Seligman, who is co-producing the event. “This is more of a multi-dimensional show. There are many different things that will be going on beginning at 6pm at the BSIDE Lounge and then at 7pm we’ll open up the Grog Shop. There will be art plastered downstairs and upstairs. The bands will go on after 8pm.

“With all of the lighting we’re bringing in, the Grog Shop will have never looked how it will that night. I’m trying to produce a show that itself is a piece of art.”

As far as the Mayhem title, Seligman said it’s tied to an original group of DIY artists that held shows under the moniker more than a decade ago.

“I was not a part of the original Mayhem, but I’ve been friends with a bunch of them for a long time,” Seligman said. “This show came up after I reached out on social media to Staci McNasty asking if she still painted. She said she did and was hoping to come back to town to show her work.

“Now many weeks later, here we are with Geriatric Mayhem, because it’s the 10thanniversary from the last Mayhem show and everybody is a lot older.”

The artist lineup includes Seligman, McNasty, Derek Hess, Bernadette Glorioso, Scott Pickering, the Eckles Sisters, Dana Depew, Hadley K. Conner, John Howitt, Carrie Bukala, Clay Parker, Kimberly Hendzel, Jim Karpinski, Elizabeth Adams, Justin Brennan, Radioactive Retro, R.E. Yody, Terrance Stodemeyer, Grace Victoria Gerengher, Mike Gutierrez, Funky Cold Patina, Cassandra Fenicottero and Chod.

“There’s going to be metal work, jewelry, paintings, photography, multimedia pieces, abstract modern and contemporary,” Seligman said. “There’s going to be a lot of variety.”

As far as the music is concerned, performing will be We Live by Night, Grievance Committee and Blind Archer, as well as Kung Fu Bob, DJ Grandbag and DJ Square Biz.

“We’re also going to have vending because not everybody can afford a framed piece of art,” Seligman said. “So there’s a group of artists that will be selling prints and the bands will be selling merchandise. We’re just trying to create a unique atmosphere.

“That’s why we’re calling it an event more than a show. It’s not going to be your typical art show.”
