Cleveland-born, Chicago-based artist Michelle Marie Murphy is working on her MFA in photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago right now. But in the meantime, she’s presenting her first solo show at the 2731 Prospect Gallery here in Cleveland. Shimmering Schemata “engage [s] with a thought-provoking mix of issues including beauty and female identity, consumerism and our collective relationship to the media,” according to her artist statement.
She says she found the material for these abstract photos in the makeup and beauty aisles at a CVS store: these are eye shadows, tubes of lipstick and fake fingernails. She likens these to the products found in an art supply store.
“Her tiny eye shadow palettes reproduced at a greatly enhanced scale and multiplied in repeating patterns, lose their original significance and gain new meanings,” says her statement.
It opens with a reception Fri 6/18 @ 6-9pm. Opening the same evening is a three-man show of painting and print work by Brandon Juhasz, Aaron Koehn and Erik Parra called Perpetual Sunset, “linked via their mutual interest in fabricated realities that seem to be subversively lurking in every corner of contemporary life.”
Both shows run through Sat 7/30; the artists will give a talk at the gallery Sat 7/23 @ 2pm.
