The historic Everett Covered Bridge in what is now the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is not only the last surviving covered bridge in Summit County and a rare specimen of a wooden bridge constructed along the girder design. It is also reputed to be haunted by a hitchhiker, connected possibly to the 1877 death of a local man whose carriage overturned in the nearby creek.
But the Everett Covered Bridge has another distinction this Tuesday night. It’s the unlikely venue for an annual contra dance. The long, narrow structure (no longer a main thoroughfare, needless to say) provides a particularly apt venue for the Anglo-French style of community dancing, which has many followers in northeast Ohio
Carol Kopp will be the caller at the soiree, and the band playing is Hu$hmoney. The dance will also include a twilight ice cream social; attendees are welcome to bring their own cool treats to share at this most unique social occasion. The advice is out there to “wear sturdy shoes.” Probably for running away from the ghost, if it attacks; one never knows. Admission is $8, or $6 for students.
