Kent area folk rockers the Speedbumps have been evolving by leaps and bounds, raising their profile in the area — and outside it — and expanding their four-piece lineup to six to explore more sonic possibilities. In October 2012, they joined forces with the Canton Symphony for a program that featured symphonic arrangements of the band’s thoughtful, well-crafted tunes.
The collaboration went over so well, they’re doing it again. The new program will feature material from the band’s 2013 album The Harbors We Seek, as well as older tunes. The scoring of the Speedbumps’ songs for the symphony was done by the band’s bassist Kevin Martinez, who has a masters degree in music composition from DePaul University.
“The Speedbumps’ sound definitely lends itself to being backed by an orchestra, and what we discovered through our collaboration is that the Northeast Ohio audience is hungry for symphonic adaptations of popular music created by homegrown artists,” said the symphony’s executive director Michelle Mullaly.
The band and the 39-member orchestra will perform together at the Canton Palace Theatre in downtown Canton. Tickets are $18-$28. Go here to buy them.
