While much Cajun music is acoustic and sounds best at folk festivals in southwest Louisiana, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys have forged a sound that respects the traditional sounds of Cajun music with its leaping fiddle and jaunty button box while giving it the power of rock & roll. With a jolt of electricity provided by the guitar/bass/drums rhythm section, the band has reached out beyond its own ethnic enclave to play on stage around the world over the last 25 years.
Riley is bringing the Mamou Playboys to the Beachland Ballroom for a real bayou barn dance. The show’s being promoted as “primarily seated” but we suspect most of the crowd will be on their feet very quickly.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
