There was certainly something in the air in the early ’60s, when middle-class white boys started decamping for New York’s Greenwich Village where they fueled what became known as the ’60s folk revival. Inspired by folk musicians like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, bluegrass musicians like Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and blues performers like the Reverend Gary Davis and Leadbelly, they were looking for a grittiness and authenticity not found in the ’50s pop of Patti Page or Johnny Mathis and they wanted to dive deeper than ’50s rock & roll.

The scene produced many noted artists (best known: Bob Dylan), many of whom had a devotion that finds them still performing today in their late ’60s or early ’70s.

One of these is David Bromberg, who rapidly became an in-demand player for his outstanding multi-instrumental skills on guitar, mandolin, dobro, pedal steel and fiddle. Although he was kicking around the scene in the early ’60s, he came late to making his own records, putting out his debut album in 1970. And despite his relatively low public profile, he’s played with artists like Willie Nelson, Jerry Garcia, George Harrison and yes, Bob Dylan.

Now 69, he’s heading out on the road with his David Bromberg Quintet, who will almost certainly touch on every variety of roots and folk music you could want to hear when they perform an evening at the Kent Stage.

Tickets are $30-$40.
