Tell Your Story
But first you gotta vote on Tue 11/4. We’re endorsing Ed FitzGerald for Governor, and Armond Budish for Cuyahoga County Executive, and recommending a YES vote on both Issue 4 for Cleveland Schools and Issue 6 for Tri-C. Regardless of your choices, it’s imperative that you vote. And help write the next chapter in our region’s story. Watch our video interviews with Armond Budish and Jack Schron and decide for yourself.
Ted Sikora & Milo Miller have decided to tell their story as a graphic novel set in Cleveland. Ray Petro did it by changing his life, building the first indoor MTB park, then writing his life story. Theatre Ninjas are doing it by bending genders at Guide to Kulchur. SPACES are choosing to party as they honor their biggest fans & board members Sam Hubish & Jeffry Chiplis, and CC has the video.
A key chapter in our region’s new story is the rise of independent chefs, innoculating the CLE against chain food with Cleveland Restaurant Week. Bones, Bugs & Dead Animals, zombies, a vampire opera, a Dia de los Muertos party, and a release of the Festivus Holiday Ale. Great week for a story. –Thomas Mulready

Ed FitzGerald is the only candidate in the field truly qualified to be governor — and he’d be a fine one. Governor FitzGerald would focus on strengthening the economy for everyone, not just making the rich richer. He’d fight the for-profit charter school interests to which Kasich is beholden. And he would be able block the more extreme ideas of a legislature that, thanks to gerrymandering, is too tilted toward one party and often controlled by its radical wing.
Realizing that FitzGerald would veto attempts to ban abortion or permanently repeal clean energy standards, the legislature might spend less time contemplating such measures and look at things Ohioans would really like to see happen — like fixing education funding and creating more living-wage jobs. Read the full endorsement here.
To say the Cuyahoga County Executive race involves the filling of small shoes would be an understatement. And in the persons of Republican Jack Schron and Democrat Armond Budish, county voters have the task of choosing between two candidates who are (at best) just barely capable of stepping into Ed FitzGerald’s lilliputian loafers.
There is little to choose from between these two. However, the fact that Schron was the only member of County Council to support the union-busting Senate Bill 5 and also backs the Republican agenda to squelch voter turnout is more than enough to disqualify him to head a county that has consistently supported union and voting rights. Read the full endorsement here.
A legend on a T-shirt states, “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.” That statement alone should convince voters to pass both Cleveland Issue 4 and Cuyahoga County Issue 6. Issue 4 would authorize the floating of bonds to pay for the construction of 20 to 22 new schools and the renovation of 20-plus additional buildings in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District all without raising taxes. The great thing is, state funding will provide $2 for every $1 CMSD spends on construction. It’s a winner.
So too is Issue 6, a renewal of a 2.1 mill levy and an increase of 0.9 mill for operating costs for Cuyahoga Community College. Tri-C has consistently been ranked as one of the top community colleges in the nation. The institution has been on the cutting edge in retraining our workforce for todays jobs. Without the funding provided by Issue 6, Tri-C would have cut to $40 million a year from the opportunities it offers county residents for a quality, affordable education. That funding would cost homeowners only $2.63 a month per $100,000 property valuation. Read more.
CoolCleveland offered candidates in the Cuyahoga County Executive race the opportunity to answer a few questions live on camera and in writing. Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready spoke with Republican candidate Jack Schron, discussing his positions on unions, Cuyahoga County College Savings Account Program, sustainability, womens issues, re-entry and leadership, then with Democratic candidate Armond Budish on gridlock in politics, the struggles of the Democratic party in Ohio, Budish’s vision for the County, economic development, and what a successful Budish administration would look like.
For years large comic book covers of Apama – The Undiscovered Animal dominated the windows of a building located at the corner of E. 9th and Superior Avenue.
While intelligent and curious folk would use the Internet to find out more, others may still be in the dark regarding the local comic book series co-written by Ted Sikora and Milo Miller, and illustrated by Spanish artist Benito Gallego…

Few people escape the life that Ray Petro had built for himself: spending the better part of everyday “nursing a Stoli rocks with a shot of Jaeger and an eight-ball of coke…”
Then he discovered mountain biking, and built something else that has changed his life, and the lives of thousands of others: the world’s first indoor bike park, right here in Cleveland. He eventually built a second, in Milwaukee, and sold his company to Trek, the worlds largest bike company.
Now he’s told his extraordinary life story in a new book, Ray’s: The Inspirational True Story of The World’s First Mountain Bike Park. Ray spends a few minutes with Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready talking about his journey, his life and his incredible achievements.

The Cleveland Browns and The United Way of Greater Cleveland teamed up last week in order to construct a new playground at the K-8 Louis Agassiz School, as part of their Play360 campaign. The campaign, which was launched with the hopes of inspiring kids to play 60 minutes each day, really came through for the playgroundless students of the school.
A project hat has been ten years in the making, the team assembled last Tue 10/21 to complete the task in merely six hours. It’s always great to see the team in action on and off the field.
Kent State University, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and The Cleveland Water Alliance are partnering up to bring you their 2nd annual Water Research Symposium. With the theme being “Water Infrastructure and Rebounding Cities,” it’s easy to see how key topics like Water Policy, the Ecology of Water & the Great Lakes, and Green Design & Urban Infrastructure will certainly be worth discussing at the conference.
CoolCleveland Correspondent Marty Bielat met up with Kent State’s Dr. Grant McGimpsey to discuss the upcoming symposium. Dr. McGimpsey answered our questions, and spoke on the importance of respecting our water resources and the need for more sustainable care.

Artists, board members and volunteers Jeffy Chiplis and Sam Hubish have been involved with SPACES since the mid-1980s. On Sat 11/1 they will be honored for their service, activism and special brand of joie de vivre at SPACES’ Optical Delusions benefit.
They talk about their first memories of SPACES and some of SPACES’ innovative programs with Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready who has known the pair since they presented work in the Performance Art Festival.
How many times in the past three months have we all heard Clevelanders saying things like, “If you told me a year ago that LeBron James would be soliciting Cavs fans to vote on which number he should wear or whether he should continue with his signature ‘Chalk Toss,’ I would have told you that you were dreaming?”…

Honey Bucket may be young, but they’ve been around long enough to know what makes Clevelanders groove to the beat. With a funky, folksy mix they’ve come to describe as “newgrass,” Honey Bucket is setting the bar high with a genre of music that’s pleasantly surprising and thoroughly enjoyable.
It was a great time this weekend at the brand new Music Box Supper Club in the Flats as we celebrated the band’s 3rd anniversary in style with a Halloween themed party. It was great seeing friends, enjoying drinks throughout the evening and donning a costume. CoolCleveland‘s Samantha Fletcher caught up with vocalist Brendan O’Malley to get the scoop on what was one of the best parties this weekend.
Greater Cleveland Congregations (GCC) is “a non-partisan coalition of faith communities and partner organizations in Cuyahoga County working together to build power for social justice.”
As part of its mission to improve the quality of life for everyone in the region, the organization meets with County Prosecutor Tim McGinty in an effort to insure the county’s criminal justice system doesn’t needlessly (and disproportionately) punish the poor, and persons of color. Indeed, a worthwhile cause…
