When it comes to rock music, Chrissie Hynde is the pride of Akron — even though she was never an active perform in its music scene and didn’t start making music publicly until moving to London in the mid ’70s. But her band the Pretenders made a huge international splash with their self-titled 1979 debut album, and Akron (and Cleveland) proudly claimed her.
A lot has gone on since then. Hynde’s spending more time back home in Akron after years as an ex-pat. For several years, the ardent animal rights activist and vegetarian had a meat-free restaurant in downtown Akron called Vegeterranean.
It was never a big secret that Hynde WAS the Pretenders, hiding behind a group name, especially after two of the group’s four founding members died of drugs overdoses in the early ’80s. She wrote the songs and it was her rich, womanly, soulful voice that made the group’s sound instantly recognizable.
But now for the first time, Hynde has release an album under her own name. And with Stockholm hitting the streets, she’s hitting the road, with a nice show for her proud hometown fans at the Akron Civic Theatre.
