It’s hard to imagine a band making music more upbeat and fun than Mo’Mojo’s. Of course, the Akron band starts with a base of some of the most celebratory music in the world: zydeco. And while they don’t stick slavishly to the traditional Louisiana sound — dipping into its cousin, Cajun music, as well as country, folk, blues and rock — it powers everything they play. The seven-musician ensemble is fronted by dynamic vocalist/accordionist Jen Maurer who always seems to have a smile on her face when she’s playing.
The group is playing one of Akron Civic Theatre’s intimate Club@the Civic cabaret shows and one can only hope they have a dance area designated or people will be dancing on their chairs. Boy=Girl, Maurer’s bluegrass-influenced side project with Paul Kovac of Hillbilly Idol, opens so you can hear a couple of sides of this talented area musician in one night.
