Baroque music is certainly finding its champions in Cleveland with Apollo’s Fire and Les Delices already well-established. Burning River Baroque is the newest entry, launched just two years ago.

Soprano/baroque cellist Malina Rauschenfels, baroque violinist/violist Peter Lekx, and organist Paula Maust form the core of the ensemble, and in their short time together have already appeared in New York, Boston, and Berkeley, with more out-of-town, as well as local, shows booked for this season. Focusing initially on baroque string compositions, they’ve since added vocal cantatas and wind music to their repertoire.

They’ll do four programs this year, starting with “A Voice in the Wilderness: Sacred Music of the German Baroque.” It includes music by Bach, Biber, Buxtehude, Klein, Kuhnau, and Telemann. They’ll perform at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ohio City on Friday, St. Alban’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, and Peace Community Church in Oberlin on Sunday. The shows are free, with a freewill offering taken, although you can reserve priority seating for $25. The Sunday show is a benefit for First Lutheran Church in Lorain.

The group is also part of the Cleveland Orchestra’s two-week Bach celebration. They’ll be at Severance Hall’s Reinberger Auditorum Sat 10/18 at 4pm for a free, open-to-the-public set of music by — duh! — Bach.
