While the shrinking of Youngstown has been in the news, others, like the owners of Avalon Downtown, are investing in the city. A locally owned pizza place opened in 1012, Avalon’s menu features 10 specialty pizzas ranging from the traditional tomato sauce & mozzarello to a potato spinach and egg/cheese/parsley pies — and seven are vegetarian. Or build your own. Avalon also offers several of its pizzas in take-and-bake form for you to warm up at home. The menu isn’t limited to pizza either. It’s also got a list of paninis, a sweets menu that includes pies, cake and cookies, and what it calls its “signature” foods, ranging from pasta and meatballs to fried smelts. And it’s open until 2am on Friday and Saturday to sate those late-night munchies.
