Afro-Peruvian Jazz at Nighttown

Tue 3/19 @ 7PM

The lively, intricate music of trumpet player Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet has garnered a legion of loyal fans, both in his native Peru and stateside. The African influence was already embedded in the music of coastal Peru. Alegria took those sounds and the native percussion instruments and set them in a contemporary jazz framework informed by his extensive academic knowledge — he’s got a doctorate from the University of Southern California.

It’s the kind of music that engages mind and body equally on deep level. Alegria has an Ohio connection too; he got his undergraduate degree from Kenyon College. Tickets for the group’s Nighttown show are $20.
