A peek at this week’s festivals

Last week’s hot festival at St. Demetrios was a warm-up to this weekend’s Lorain International Festival. The vines and wines of Lake Erie are being celebrated at Geneva-on-the-Lake; and at nearby Debonne Vineyards, wine will be poured while jazz fills the air. Boston Mills’ and Notre Dames’ art festivals offer art to wear on your person and on your walls, but the hand-knit scarf and recycled silverware yard art I bought at Clifton Arts and Music Festival this past weekend cannot be replicated.

Festival time continues this weekend. The Lake Erie WineFest at The Landing Festival Marketplace on the strip of Geneva-on-the-Lake highlights fifteen local wineries and provides continuous entertainment on Lake Erie. Sip some wine, listen to music, and do a little shopping in an area that’s a throw-back to yesteryear. Look for the booth with copies of the book Ohio’s Lake Erie Wineries by Cool Cleveland contributor Claudia Taller (me), on sale for $21.99 a copy. The event takes place Saturday and Sunday.

Head out to the melting pot city of Lorain for the Lorain International Festival. This is a not-to-be-missed festival with nine separate events taking place primarily in downtown Lorain and culminating this weekend. The cultures and people of Lorain come together by showcasing costumes, traditions, music, and food of the various cultures represented throughout Lorain. Various nationalities, cultures and our community are celebrated with the sharing of gifts from our many homelands through crafts, food, music, costume and tradition. The three-day bazaar takes place along the scenic Black River.

The Boston ArtsFest heats up the Cuyahoga Valley with local art and visiting artists starting on Friday and through the rest of the weekend. The event has been going strong for 40 years, and will be at Boston Mills Ski Resort this weekend and next. Art is beautifully displayed at this premier Ohio arts event where food and music are also part of the experience. Relax as you stroll along looking at art in the valley.

Notre Dame College in South Euclid will celebrate the fine arts on Sat 6/25 and Sun 6/26 with Art on the Circle. Jewelry, ceramics, paintings and other art will be displayed on Quinlivan Circle. When the day wanes to evening on Saturday, Shakespeare’s “Love’s Labor Lost” will be performed at 7PM. For hours and ticket information for the performance, click here.

The Cleveland Metroparks’ Frostville Museum is pairing vintage basement with bluegrass music on Sun 6/26. Baseball will be played in vintage knickers and high socks at the Olmsted Historical Society’s historic village. The Whiskey Island Shamrocks Base Ball Club (Cleveland) and The Hoover Sweepers Baseball Club (Canton) will play ball by the 1860s rules at 11:15AM and 3:15PM. Northwest Territory, a bluegrass band, will provide entertainment.

Debonne Vineyards’ Jazz Fest on Sunday will feature the music of Forecast during an afternoon in which you can sit outside in the sun and sample the Madison winery’s reisling and chambourcin. Music will be played from 2:30 until 5:30PM and the Grill will be open. This is another opportunity to pick up an autographed copy of Ohio’s Lake Erie Wineries.
