When it was announced that Harriet Tubman would be replacing Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, congressional bigots such as Steve King (IA-04) went into meltdown. A woman! A black woman! A black woman who was a freed slave and abolitionist! Horrors!

Cleveland writer Dr. Mary Weems has penned a new play called Talkin’ on a Twenty Dolla Bill, which imagines Tubman and Jackson in a conversation about race and power, confronting issues of slavery, money and corruption. Somewhere Steve King is putting his hands over his ears and humming loudly.

Playwrights Local, the new group devoted to producing plays by Clevelanders, will be hosting two staged readings of the play with India Nicole Burton as Tubman and Eric Schmiedl as Andrew Jackson Michael Oatman directs.

On Friday it will take place at the Twelve Literary and Performing Arts incubator on E. 156th. On Saturday it will take place right the Creative Space at Waterloo Arts just up the street.
