A university degree may not mean anything in the job market anymore, but colleges do provide one indispensible service to society: college radio. Without the freewheeling programming that is local college radio, the airwaves of Cleveland would be a far duller soundscape of plain-vanilla top-40 desolation.
And Cleveland State University’s WCSB has been one of the livelier destinations on the FM dial ever since coming on the air four decades ago this year. Mahall’s 20 Lanes in Lakewood, the unique and quirky bowling-alley-cum-concert-venue, will host a special night celebrating the endurance of WCSB, hitched to the unfortunate 2016 passing of another phenom who first gained notice in the 1970s, Prince.
Rather hard to say whether the university hipsters are being ironic with this bundled Prince tribute or sincere (Michael Jackson, for instance, would have definitely been ironic). Either way, expect a Paisley Park dance party, Prince karaoke, screenings of Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon and more. Hey, it’s WCSB; maybe even No-Money Mark From Middleburgh Heights will show up. Admission is free.
