In the last few years, Cleveland has been reclaiming its ethnic heritage in a big way. We’re seen a wave of new younger polka bands form and festivals like Dyngus Day and Kurentovanje added to the calendar.
And then there’s Paczki Day, a sort of Polish Mardi Gras. The place to go is Rudy’s Strudel & Bakery, the nearly 70-year establishment in Parma that specializes in paczki, a type of Polish pastry, which they sell in more than 25 flavors.
You can snag the first ones at 6am Tuesday, and all day the polka music will be pumping starting with DJ Kishka (who founded Cleveland’s Dyngus Day), followed by DJ C. Randolph C. and Andrew the Mailman. There will be polka dance instructors on hand to help you enjoy the music to the fullest.
But you don’t have to wait until Tuesday to celebrate. Rudy ’s partner, Platform Beer Co., will be hosting a family-friendly Paczki Eve party. The folks from Rudy’s will be there with pierogies and paczki — including the pivo paczki made with one of Platform’s own brews. And yes, there will be polka music and dancing there too.
