Plant sales abound at this time of year as the soil is warming and it’s time to get stuff in the ground. What makes the annual Crown Point Ecology Center Plant Sale and Farm Festival different is that it offers all certified organically grown plants, seeds and other growing supplies.
You’ll find both heirloom and hybrid vegetable varieties grown at Crown Point, along with unusual native prairie flower perennial seedlings. There will be more than 230 varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers to choose from. The sale also features vendors selling gardening items, food trucks, music, cooking demonstrations, gardening lectures and workshops.
Come Saturday or Sunday for the main sale, or join the Crown Point Ecology Center and come Friday evening for the members-only sale for first pick of the more in-demand plants. There will be a membership table to join you up on the spot. It’s $50 and it supports Crown Point’s mission “to demonstrate the practical applications of ecology and to connect spirituality, social justice and environmental protection” through educating about and advocating for food security ad sustainable land use. In keeping with that mission, leftover plants are donated to schools, social service agencies and community gardens in low-income neighborhoods.
