The Cleveland Orchestra pulls out all the stops this week, performing Berlioz’s 1846 opera The Damnation of Faust. It’s in French but it will have English super titles and who doesn’t know the story of the scholar Faust who sold his soul to the devil Mephistopheles in return of youth and knowledge — and then the devil comes to collect. It’s been made into an opera numerous times including the well known versions by Charles Gounod and Arrigo Boito.
Charles Dutoit will conduct the orchestra, while tenor Paul Groves (pictured) sings Faust opposite bass Willard White’s Mephistopheles. Mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose sings Marguerite, the woman for whom Faust sacrifices everything. The Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus will contribute to the dense grandeur of the performance.
There will be three performance; tickets range from $49-$162.
