Ramp Up Peninsula Fest Celebrates the Spring Onion

Ramps

Sat 4/25 @ 11AM-6PM

Virtually the first new, in-season vegetable you see at local farmers markets is one that’s a little baffling to many people — the ramp. It’s not really that mysterious. Also called the spring onion, it’s a member of the allium family, which includes onions, chives and garlic. It has some of the taste and flavor of those plants, with a distinctive edge of its own.

Want to have a taste and learn more? Peninsula is hosting the Ramp Up Peninsula festival on the grounds of Hale Farm and Village. A whole bunch of local vendors will be featuring foods made with ramps, including Fresh Fork Market, Spice of Life Catering, Sow Food LLC and the Pierogi Lady. They’re even threatening to have ramp candies and ice cream.

In addition, there’ll be local artists and artisans displaying their work and local folk/acoustic musicians performing on two stages, as well as food and cooking demos — not all of them about ramps, if you’ve had your fill. Don King, the Mushroom Hunter, will be leading a plant identification walk from 2-3pm if you’d like to get out in the woods and field and learn what grows there.

Admission is only $3 and kids 12 and under are free. The event takes place rain or shine.
