Blu Jazz Akron is offering jazz fans a chance to hear the students and the teacher in the same evening. First onstage is the Kent State Jazz Orchestra, the KSU jazz program’s elite big band, focusing on both new and classic big band music. Half the proceeds from the show will go back to support the music department at KSU.
You’ll want to stick around after their show because the director of the KSU jazz studies program, sax player Bobby Selvaggio, will perform with one of his several ensembles, the Grass Roots Movement. Also featuring bassist Kip Reed, drummer Anthony Taddeo and guitarist Noah Gershwin, the group wotks engaging funk and rock grooves into a lively jazz context.
The Kent State Jazz Orchestra performs at 7pm; Grass Roots Movement plays at 9pm. Admission to each show is $10.
