Doug Gillard has worked at his own music for decades while becoming better known for serving as a reliable sideman/guitarist in a variety of other people’s groups.
Gillard has roots a mile deep in the northeast Ohio music scene, starting as a teenage guitar player in punk bands such as Starvation Army and then landing in the critically acclaimed Death of Samantha in the mid ’80s. He went on to play with Cobra Verde, Dayton’s Guided by Voices and his own Gem before pulling up stakes and moving to North Carolina.
His most recent solo effort Parade On was released last year, displaying once again his solid mastery of well-crafted pop/rock that should be better known than it is.
He’ll be at the Grog Shop with the similarly minded Chamber Strings, fronted by Kevin Junior who returned to town after spending a decade and a half in Chicago where he formed the much-admired pop-based group. He reassembled it here with like-minded Cleveland area players and they’ve been doing shows for the last year.
Admission is $7, and yes, it is a very late show. The Grog has an earlier one booked, so night owls, take note.
