Akron-area band the Strange Familiar has a long history. Its two principal members, guitarist Jeff Andrea and vocalist Kira Leyden, met in elementary school and formed a band called Jaded Era with two other classmates.
That band went on to compete in three High School Rock Offs, release three albums and become a high-profile act in the area. They even had one of their songs recorded by Ashlee Simpson, back when she was hot.
Jaded Era ran its course after a decade. Leyden and Andrea regrouped as the Strange Familiar and spent several years in Los Angeles where they made contacts that landed their music on popular TV shows.
Eventually they ended up back in Akron. Leyden and Andrea are married now, and they’re parents. But they’ve still got the music in them. They recently released a new album called The Day The Light Went Out.
They’ll be performing songs from that album as well as old favorites when they play their first-ever show at the Akron Civic Theatre as part of its intimate cabaret series. Leyden, Andrea and their bandmates, bassist Frank Freeman and drummer Nick Sainato, will be joined by a classical string quartet to make the arrangements special for the occasion.
Tickets are $15.
