Powerhouse rocker Melissa Etheridge made a splash with her 1988 debut album and her single “Bring Me Some Water,” a winning streak that continued through the mid ’90s with hits like “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window.”
One of the few artists openly influenced by Bruce Springsteen, her non-generic rock, spotlighting her grainy voice and driving guitar playing, easily spanned the transition between the pop-metal ’90s and grunge ’90s, which killed off many careers. On top of that, she attracted more passionate followers when she came out as a lesbian prior to the release of her 1993 album Yes I Am.
Since the gay audience is probably the most intensely loyal and supportive one there is, she’s got her career guaranteed for life. But she’s continued to pour her heart out in her songs, seldom going more than two or three years without a new studio album. She’s just released This Is M.E. ahead of her fall tour, which brings her to PlayhouseSquare’s State Theatre. Singer/songwriter Alexander Cardinale opens.
Tickets are $27.50-$100. And each ticket purchased online gets a free digital download of This Is M.E.
