If someone tells you Junior Brown is a country artist, don’t go expecting to hear contemporary party-country clichés about drinking beer in the back of a pick-up truck with a girl in cutoff jeans.
Brown channels the spirit of old-school country when songs were about the real lives and emotions of real people who didn’t have the opportunity to make every day a party. Post World War II honky-tonk is his touchstone on which he’s built a style of his own, that’s often humorous, occasional heart-wrenching.
Among the elements of his style are his gruff but surprisingly supple voice and the “guit-steel,” a double-necked instrument he invented himself. Unsurprisingly, he launched his career out of Austin, where clichés are less valued than in Nashville.
He’s heading for the Music Box Supper Club. Tickets are $32 in advance, $36 at the door.
