Valerie Salstrom’s Get Hep Swing hosts regular swing dances a couple of times a month at least. But for Thanksgiving weekend, she’s got something really special in the pipeline.
Sure, there will be the usual swing dance lesson and brush-up session from 8-9pm, following by dancing at 9. But the music will be provided by neo-swing legend Johnny Boyd. Boyd’s band Indigo Swing helped launch the swing revival in the late ’90s. He hasn’t been to Cleveland since Indigo Swing played the Odeon back in 2002.
With his sleek voice, old-fashioned good looks and music that milks everything that’s danceable from swing, jazz, country, gospel, pop and rock, you might find yourself pausing in mid-dance to take a closer listen.
Following the lesson, which will teach the basic jitterbug steps and well as some fancy footwork for more advanced dancers, Boyd and his new band will provide the soundtrack from 9 until midnight. You don’t need a partner; dancers rotate so you’ll get to cut a rug with lots of different people and make new friends.
It takes place at the Waterloo Ballroom at the Slovenian Workmen’s Home. Admission is just $12.
