Maria Jacobs spent more than a decade performing in Los Angeles before returning to her roots in Cleveland. The jazz/pop/folk singer/composer with the rich, dark voice and insinuating phrasing has a particular affinity for the music of Joni Mitchell, three of whose songs appear on her latest album Here Comes Winter, her fifth.
It also features her distinctive version of the Beach Boy’s 1963 song “In My Room,” one of the earlier intimations that songwriter Brian Wilson had more on his mind than surfing. The album also includes a couple of jazz standards and five of her own compositions, two written with Cleveland keyboard player Cliff Habian.
Habian will be in the band when Jacobs celebrates the new CD’s release at Nighttown, along with guitarist Bob Fraser and bassist Brian Wildman.
Tickets are $15.
