Bella Sin, proprietor of northeast Ohio burlesque troupe Le Femme Mystique and founder of the Ohio Burlesque Festival, is Mexican, so you know she’s pulling out all the stops of her third annual Dio de Los Muertos Burlesque Show (that’s Day of the Dead for your monolinguists), taking place at the Beachland Ballroom.

Some people look at Day of the Dead as a sort of Mexican Halloween (the actual date is November 1) but it’s a lot more than that. It’s a day to honor one’s deceased ancestors and pay tribute to their legacy in the world. Its mood is celebratory rather than grisly, as the spirits return to party with the living. So burlesque fits in well.

You’ll get to see all your favorite performers from Le Femme Mystique including Bella Sin, Doll Bambuno, Eliza Sidecar, belly dancer Mahsitti Jade, drag act Lady J Martinez, and host Abby Downtown, along with a couple of guest performers: Columbus’ Miss Theresa and Kentucky’s Siobhan Atomica (pictured). DJ Nemesis will provide music.

And while there’s usually a participatory element in Le Femme Mystique’s evenings, this one has more than usual. Guests are invited to come in costume for a contest that includes winners in categories like best male and best female costume, most original and best sugar skull face paint. (The sugar skull is one of the traditional accoutrement of Dio de los Muertos in Mexico). There’ll also be a Monster Mash dance-off and a Rocky Horror Time Warp dance-off. So come prepared to join in, not just sit and watch.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door, $20 for reserved, $25 for VIP.
