Bruce Hornsby Performs a Solo Evening @KentStage

Most people probably haven’t thought much about Bruce Hornsby in years. His career as at hitmaker was very brief, confined to a couple of years in the late ’80s when he had a massive hit “The Way It Is” and a pair of follow-up top ten tunes featuring his gentle, generous vocals and thought-provoking lyrics set to flowing melodies.

So the casual music fan might be surprised to see him back in town at the Kent Stage. But the Virginia singer/songwriter/keyboardist has never stopped making music. He spent a couple of years in the early ’90s as the touring keyboardist for the Grateful Dead, then launched a solo career that produced several albums in the ’90s, started a collaboration with country bluegrass artist Ricky Skaggs, formed his current band the Noisemakers, experimented with different genres including jazz and electronica, and developed a looser approach to music, undoubtedly inspired by his relationship with the Dead.

He’s now back on the road with his solo show for “An Evening with Bruce Hornsby,” which gives him the chance to explore the length and breadth of his career in whatever way strikes his mood. Each concert ticket includes a copy of a double live disc of pieces from his 2012 and 2013 solo tours.

Tickets are $55-$68.
