Composer Jon Deak was the longtime associate principal bassist with the New York Philharmonic, but it’s his compositions that have attracted attention. He was nominated for the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for his concerto for string quartet and orchestra “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow,” based on the 1819 Washington Irving short story.

Cleveland chamber group the Blue Water Orchestra is including the piece as part of their next program. It will feature BlueWater concertmaster Kenneth Johnson (pictured) and Charles Morey of the Indianapolis Symphony on violins, Cavani Quartet violist Kristen Docter and Cleveland Orchestra cellist Bryan Dumm. The role of the narrator will be taken by WCLV’s Robert Conrad.

The concert will open with Arnold Schoenberg’s arrangement of Claude Debusyy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Respighi’s Trittico Botticelliano, musical reflections on paintings by Botticelli.

It takes place at Plymouth Church UCC in Shaker Heights.

Tickets are $23.
