Chicago’s critically acclaimed experimental roots band Wilco are playing their first ever show in Akron at the Akron Civic Theatre which, with its ornate Moorish interior and starry ceiling with floating clouds, is a wonderful place to see any band.
Wilco emerged from the ashes of one of the seminal alt-county bands Uncle Tupelo but over the years, took a decidedly different path. In its two decades, its music, while still retaining some of its countrified feel, has gone off in quirky and hard-to-categorize directions. The band’s 2002 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot led to their departure from their major label when it deemed the album too difficult and uncommercial, but after its release on indie Nonesuch, it became, and remains, their best-selling album.
Together for two decades now, the band’s had a stable lineup for a decade that includes founding members, vocalist Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt, keyboard player Mikael Jorgenson, drummer Glenn Kotche, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, and noted avant-garde jazz guitarist Nels Cline.
Special guest on the current tour is Bahamas, the stage name of sunny symphonic Canadian pop artist Alfie Jurvanen.
Tickets are $35-$59.50.
