OSU Extension Workshops Cover Worm Composting, Hoop Houses

Sat 9/6 @ 9:30AM-1PM

Wed 9/10 @ 6-8PM

For those who want to take their growing to the next level, the Ohio State University Extension in Cuyahoga County has a pair of free workshops this week.

As urban farming takes hold in Cleveland, some growers are starting to explore the next frontier: season extension.

That can be as simple as row covers or as elaborate as greenhouses. Hoop houses aka high tunnels are an intermediate step. These are open-framed structures with plastic covering that help retain warmth and protect plants from the elements so you can have fresh greens year round.

The OSU Extension is offering a high tunnel workshop to cover topics like site selection, preparation, and layout, types of high tunnels and construction, financial assistance available and high-tunnel management.

It takes place at 1662 Crawford Street, near East 89th and Harkness Road on Sat 9/6. Bring a lawn chair.

In the garden, worms are one of your best friends. If you find them in your soil, it’s a sign you’ve got good soil. And worms can take the composting process to a higher level, digesting organic waste and turning it into rich castings to add nutrients to your soil. The process is called vermicomposting.

At the OSU Extension’s vermicomposting workshp, taking place at the Ka-La Healing Garden Center (2251 E. 73rd Street), you can learn all about it. They’ll show you how to build a bin, show you how many worms you need to start with and how much to feed them.

The workshop is free and open to the public; no registration is necessary. It will be outdoors so dress for whatever weather is going on that day.
